It’s beauty, it’s diversity, it’s experiments, and forceful reflections; my heart will always be part of where it was formed.

Amsterdam was the city that helped set me free and allowed for my many whims and redirects. If I close my eyes, I smell the grass of the Vondelpark, where many boozy picnics took place. It’s where I lose my sense of pacifistic self the moment I cycle behind a tourist. It’s where I can hardly round a corner without the warm overwhelm of nostalgia. It’s not home for me, but it will always have my heart.

Bike City

There’s really nothing like cycling along the Amsterdam canals. Whether it was a drive back home after an all-night EDM party, an early morning yoga class, or a functional ride filled with rain and annoying tourists, throughout my time living in the city, I've always enjoyed it as a singular experience.

Dark Alleyways & Museum Tunnels

When I moved to Amsterdam my UK colleagues warned me about all the depravity the city contained. Though when asked, they admitted not having experienced it beyond the occasional stag/bachelor party... Of course, Amsterdam has its dark corners and shadows, just like every other major city does, but fortunately, it doesn't require much effort to find the beauty within and beyond the darkness.

Though not nearly as hectic as most other capital cities, Amsterdam is always on the move. Whether it's a tram shaking the bridge it crosses, the numerous boats gliding by, or the occasional car daringly snaking its way past countless people on bikes and foot, it's virtually impossible to find the place at a standstill.

Forever Moving

Beauty in Many Forms

An obvious benefit of city life is, of course, to be spoilt for entertainment choices. I've spent countless hours strolling through museums only to afterward spend even more hours on outside terraces cupping a fresh mint tea and watching people go by as my book lay face down on my table. Bliss!

Boats, Boats, Boats

One of my favorite things ever happened was when I was walking across a bridge in the Jordaan and heard a jazz band playing. Looking around, I caught sight of the beautiful Westerkerk, but no band. Until I looked down and a band on a boat appeared from under the bridge. I have a photo made on an iPhone 6, but it might just be the challenge for the coming spring and summer season to recapture it in high quality.
